Kitesurfing in North Cyprus: the complete guide to Yedidalga and Morphou Bay

Yes, North Cyprus is a very good place to kitesurf — and its best-known kite spot is Yedidalga, a small village near Gemikonağı (Lefke) on the west coast of Morphou Bay (Güzelyurt Körfezi). From April to October a steady thermal wind of around 20 knots blows side-onshore over deep water, and the beach is quiet and uncrowded. This is also where Heaven Surf House, the first kite school in North Cyprus, has been teaching since 2009.

In this guide we put together everything you need to plan a kite trip here: why the wind works, what the spot is like, when to come, which level you need, what lessons and rentals cost, and what a kite holiday at Heaven looks like from morning to night.

Why kitesurf in North Cyprus?

Cyprus offers two different kite worlds on one island. The south has more developed beach facilities, many kite schools and busy tourist areas. North Cyprus is known for untouched nature, wide open beaches and a peaceful kitesurfing atmosphere — ideal if you want space, freedom and smooth conditions.

The coastline around Morphou Bay is one of the most reliable wind corridors on the island. Here is what makes it special for kitesurfers:

  • Steady thermal wind in the season, almost every day, around 20 knots.
  • Side-onshore wind — one of the safest directions for kitesurfing, especially for beginners.
  • Space on the water, without the crowds of the big kite destinations.
  • Everything in one place: kite school, equipment rentals, kite repairs, camping, caravans and a beach bar.
  • Easy to reach: 48 km from Nicosia, 75 km from Ercan airport and 105 km from Larnaca airport.

The kite spot: Yedidalga on Morphou Bay

Yedidalga is the windiest spot on the west coast of Morphou Bay. Two things come together here. The first is the thermal wind: during the day the land heats up faster than the sea, the warm air above the land rises, and cooler air from the sea flows in to take its place. The second is the venturi effect: when the wind is squeezed by the shape of the land, it speeds up.

What you can expect at the spot:

  • Wind: a steady thermal wind around 20 knots in the season.
  • Direction: side-onshore — the wind blows along the beach and slightly towards it.
  • Water: deep water, flat inside the bay and with a light chop further out.
  • Beach: pebbles, so sea shoes are a good idea.
  • Facilities: a launching and landing area and a place to wash your equipment.

Before you come — and before every session — check the live wind station and the forecast for Yedidalga. The Windguru station “Heavensurfhouse, Yedidalga” shows the wind at the spot in real time.

Other kite spots in North Cyprus

Yedidalga is the heart of kitesurfing in North Cyprus, but it is not the only spot. In the same bay, Akdeniz Beach and Güzelyalı Beach are quiet alternatives. The Karpaz Peninsula has stronger wind and open sea for advanced riders, and on the east coast Glapsides Beach (Famagusta) and İskele Beach have shallow water and lighter wind. You find all of them on our wind and kite spots page.

When is the kitesurfing season in North Cyprus?

The main kite season runs from April to October. In these months the thermal wind blows on most days, and it is the best time to learn. Kitesurfing in Cyprus is possible all year round, but outside the season the wind is less regular.

In summer the sea is warm and a lycra is often enough. In spring and autumn the days are mild and a wetsuit keeps you comfortable on the water. For the details — wind, air and water temperatures and wetsuit advice for every month — read our kitesurfing season guide, month by month.

Kitesurfing for every level: our kite school

Our head instructor Uğur Sayılır has been teaching since 2009 and became an IKO licensed instructor in 2011. He crossed the Mediterranean Sea with his kite and board in four hours and went around Cyprus twice on a kite foil. Every course comes with an IKO kiteboarding card.

Beginners

The side-onshore wind and the steady thermal make Yedidalga a good place to start. Your instructor talks to you on the water through a waterproof radio helmet, and all lesson equipment is included, the wetsuit too. Children can start from the age of 12, and on a day without wind we do the theory, the equipment set-up and more on land.

  • Kite Intro — 2 hours, €90: your first contact with the kite.
  • Beginner course, private — 8 hours, €599: from the first kite to riding upwind.
  • Beginner course, small group — €799 for both together · 8 hours · max. 2 people.
  • Beginner camp, private — €699: 8 hours of private lessons and 5 nights of camping in our tent.
  • Kite & Camp weekend — €99.90: a discovery course on land plus one camp night, for max. 3 people, on request.

Returning and experienced riders

Back after a long break? The Refresh package (3 hours, €299, with your own equipment) takes you through everything again. Supervision (1 hour, €40, equipment included) means we watch and assist you while you ride. And if you want to fly above the water, try our kite foil lessons (3 hours, €400, equipment included). All courses and prices are on our kitesurfing lessons page.

Kite rentals and repairs at the spot

Already riding? You don’t need to bring your whole quiver. We rent modern, well-maintained gear for different wind conditions and levels: kites, twin-tip boards, harnesses, bars and safety systems, helmets, impact vests and full wetsuits.

  • Full kit (kite and board): from €40 for 2 hours.
  • Daily rates for longer stays: from €55 per day for 1–2 days down to €30 per day for 10 days or more.
  • Kite only or board only rentals, and stand-up paddle boards for calm days.

All rental prices are on our kite rentals page. If your kite gets damaged during the trip, we do kite repairs at the spot — bladders, canopy tears, bridles and valves.

Before you rent, we need proof of your experience — for example videos of you kiting. A few rules keep everyone safe: ride on your own only when you can manage your equipment and your safety by yourself; beginners never launch or land alone; and never kite in offshore wind unless you are experienced and have boat support.

What a kite holiday at Heaven looks like

Heaven isn’t just a place — it’s an experience. The kite beach, the camping and the beach bar are all in one place, so you don’t need a car to go kiting — your day simply follows the wind.

  • Morning: coffee at the beach bar (open from 09:00 until sunset), a look at the live wind and a chat about the plan.
  • During the day: your lesson or your session when the thermal is up. On calm days, take a paddle board along the coast or visit the historical sites of Soli and Vouni.
  • Evening: a drink at the beach bar at sunset, then a barbecue at the fire place under the stars.

Camping costs 650 TL (€12) per person per night with your own tent, or 800 TL (€15) with a tent from us. You can also park your own camper at our camper stop or rent one of our three campers.
